Dragons moving on in Florida

Claremont played a sloppy but gritty game against a very tough Saint Louis University team to kick off nationals. It took a try in the 79th minute by large freshman 8-man Jordan Badia-Bellinger to gain a 14-10 lead and come away with a victory. The Dragons live to take on University of Vermont tomorrow.

Claremont Earns DI Promotion

Claremont came out on top against UC Santa Barbara late Friday night to earn a promotion to Division 1 next year. After starting out slow and allowing a 19-5 deficit 20 minutes in, the Dragons found their fire and battled back to win 38-36 after 100 hard-fought minutes. With seven starters watching from the sidelines with injuries and two overtime periods before the game was settled, Claremont showed resilience from top to bottom.

Dragons Qualify for Nationals

Claremont Rugby put forth a massive effort this weekend to win the SCRFU DII playoffs and earn a spot at the National Championships in Florida.

The first round put Claremont up against UC Irvine, in a rematch of a 23-23 tie in league play. The Dragons started off slow but maintained composure to pull out a 17-14 win.

The championship game brought the host team, Loyola Marymount Lions. The game extends a long rivalry, which includes a narrow 15-13 win over Loyola two weeks prior, and a crushing one point loss in the playoff finals a year ago. This was not to the case in this years rematch. The Dragons captured momentum early and never let off the pressure. After a year of building under first year coach Jeremy Ognall, that saw Claremont losing two lopsided games the first weekend of league play, all cylinders finally fired on Sunday. Claremont looked unstoppable this day and when the final whistle blew walked off with a 43-5 win.
